Home

It felt so good to pull into my garage today.

The trip was wonderful but in the words of Dorothy, "There's no place like home!"

Now reality sets in and I look forward to shaping my days.  I take comfort in knowing that God's message to me is...."For I know the plans I have for you" declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Thanks for meandering with me these last three weeks.

Until later.......God bless

Texas......

I left Aunt Dot's this morning and headed West. After meandering here and there I ended up at Amy's. I am now sitting here at the Pittmans, feet up, watching a movie.

My retirement road trip has been a wonderful!  Now it is almost time to begin my retirement for real.

Until later.......God bless

Headed home!

This morning I got in the car and headed west.  I stopped in Montgomery, Alabama and spent 5 hours at the Alabama archives. Enjoyed my time there searching for family clues.

This leg of my journey was interstates and road construction! Not my favorite driving but oh well!

I got into Vicksburg at Aunt Dot's this evening and we are enjoying the visit.

Until later.......God bless

Connected again

We get so use to internet it is hard to believe some are not "connected"!

After a week with my aunt and cousins (more on that later) I am back on the road again, this time headed back to Texas. I left this morning with intentions of moseying through the back roads of Georgia and leaving the interstates behind, and that is exactly what I did.  Two lane country roads lined with tall trees shading the road with red Georgia dirt lining the shoulders. The ride was gentle and relaxing. Now I know some of you are rolling your eyes........... To continue, I stopped in a few of the little towns at antique shops to browse and stretch my legs. It was a perfectly wonderful drive! I have stopped for the night just over the Alabama state line.

But let me back up a little.

I left Birmingham last Sunday to drive to my aunts in Georgia. I did drive some interstates and then left them behind because I wanted to see if I could find my old home in Smyrna, Georgia. Thank goodness for the GPS because we left there when I was 9 and had no idea where it was. The area had changes a bit.  With the help of my trusty GPS I found it.  It was just as I remembered. My room was the upstairs window.  My closet went into the rafters. I had my very own private playhouse.

Next I drove a street over and found the school I went to. I started school many years ago here! I also found where our church was. I say was because it has been torn down and is now the parking lot of the new improved model.

My Aunt Evelyn loves to play rummy so when I got there she was waiting with her cards!
I could give a day by day description of our days but I think I can give a nutshell version.  We got up leisurely (because we stayed up late playing cards), we went visiting or "shopping" (looking) every day and we played rummy.

I got to spend time at each of my cousin's homes and visit with them. I got to see most of their beautiful grandchildren. We had such a good visit, and we did a lot of laughing. It was wonderful and so sad to only get to see them once a year.

Did I tell you that my Aunt Evelyn is a gardener? Well my Aunt Evelyn is a gardener! This is just a sampling of "her babies".  Well I am not a gardener, but I aspire to be----now that I have some time on my hands.  Soooooo I brought home a garden in the backseat of my car. She had me digging up bulbs and plants and gave me instruction of how to plant them. I am looking forward to having my own "Aunt Evelyn" garden. Ron ---I mean I have my work cut out for me!

Well tomorrow I am going to Montgomery, Alabama and go to the Alabama archives. I look forward to finding some clues to solve some mysteries.

Until later..........God Bless

Next stop -- Georgia

Well the conference is over and I enjoyed every minute of it.  To make it even better, I won a door prize that will allow me to take 40 online genealogy courses.  I will be able to earn a "certification" upon completion.  I am really excited about this.

I leave in the morning and head to Georgia to visit my aunt and cousins.  I don't think there will be internet but there will be cell service so if I blog, it will probably be short.

Until later..........God Bless

The stories of the past...

This conference is far exceeding my expectations.  Today every session I went to showed how to connect peoples lives with the history that was around them.  It made me want to read history books. I thought I was going to jump into an advanced math course, but maybe not......

One presenter took the facts that she discovered about her civil war grandfathers and the research she learned about their civil war units and weaved a story about their lives at that time.  It was beautiful.  Of all things, I started thinking of how I could take that research and teach a personal narrative story lesson! EEK! Oh well, I have come to my senses now and that has passed. Instead I have the beginnings of a story of my own. I have always had a dream to write a book. Maybe, just maybe this will lead to the book that is inside me. Time will tell.

I didn't really step back in time to Ellis Island! That will be for another trip!

Until later..........God Bless

A day of learning

I spent today learning! I wish we could figure out a way to make all of our students excited about learning. I guess the trick is to teach them what they care about.

Today was spent in genealogy sessions learning about techniques and strategies to find clues to unlock unanswered questions.  I know that sounds boring to most of you, but I am really excited about what I have heard. I would tell you all about it but only my genealogy buddies would care, and I will tell them when I get home.
