My genealogy conference started today and if the other days are as informative as this one it will be a success for me. This was Librarian's Day and even though I am not a librarian, I wanted to learn of some of the tools and resources genealogy librarians have and use. I was introduced to tools and websites that are new to me and offer alot of good potential information.
This picture looks weird on this background!
The highlight of the day came in the evening. I had the opportunity to go to the majestic, restored Alabama Theater that was built in 1927. We were able to tour the theater from balcony to basement. Very fancy indeed!
We were entertained by a man playing a grand Wurlitzer theater pipe organ. He played a number of old show tunes. As he was finishing his last song the organ descended out of sight through the floor on the stage. In times past the organ played the music for the silent movies shown there.
Next came song writer, musician, singer Bobby Horton. He has written and preformed many of the musical scores for Ken Burns PBS programs such as the Civil War and the Lewis and Clark programs. Now maybe you are not as familiar with PBS's Ken Burns historical programs as I am, but remember I am married to Ron!! He was outstanding. His program was stories and songs of the Civil War period. He has a marvelous gift for storytelling and portraying through music the emotions of the people of that era. He did some funny songs, patriotic and gospel. Check him out by googling (is that a word?) Bobby Horton youtube!
I am looking forward to tomorrow. The sessions sound exciting, and I am eager to go.
Until later..........God Bless
