Back in touch ----- finally

My Aunt has limited internet access and no cell phone service so I have been out of touch.  I am "plugged back in" now so I will catch up.

Saturday morning we all (Pittmans) went to Fresh for breakfast. Fresh is a Central Market type grocery that has an all you can eat pancake feast every Saturday morning.  That is the reason I planned my trip to include Sat. morning there.  The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed our feast outside.

I headed out for Mississippi after breakfast/brunch planning to meander through some towns along the way.  However - the best laid plans - well it rained on me all the way. I decided to focus on staying on the road.  I arrived at my aunts safe and sound. I enjoyed visiting with cousins and their families.

On Sunday we had a visit from distant relatives that we had never met. For the first time Aunt Dot (mom's sister) met her third cousin. It was fun to watch them visit. We had corresponded with them before about our family history. It was a delightful visit. We spent 5 hours sitting around the table sharing ideas, information, pictures and stories. The stories were wonderful.

Monday morning found Aunt Dot and I traveling to south Mississippi to visit cemeteries. We found some long lost relatives.  Of course they did not have much to say!

This morning I left and headed for Birmingham. I will spend the next four days here attending a genealogy conference.  I know that does not excite many of you but I am excited.  When I left Vicksburg everyone was preparing for hurricane Isaac. As I traveled I saw caravans of emergency vehicles headed south.

For my trip to Birmingham I did not travel the interstate. I know that does not surprise many of you. Instead I traveled the Natchez Trace - a lovely, gentle road with a speed limit of 50. I just relaxed and cruised.

I stopped and spent an hour in Columbus, Mississippi where I grew up and graduated. I drove through town and thought I had stepped back in time.  After 50 years some of the same stores were still there. I drove by my high school and the building was for sale! I drove by my old houses and the church we use to attend. I sat in the parking lot of the store my parents use to own and just "remembered".

I also went to college in Columbus -MSCW. This picture shows my first dorm room! Kinda creepy looking!

I am looking forward to tomorrow.  I hope I can find something that will help me unlock some mysteries.

Until later..........God Bless
